It’s finally starting to warm up! We fished out of Glen Arbor this morning and caught a few Kings. Sleeping Bear bay is holding some real nice fish.  We boated 3 Kings 10 to 17 lbs and a limit of Lake Trout.

The Kings came on King Fisher Fly combinations, and orange spoons, 50 to 85 feet down over 100 to 140 foot of water.

The Lake Trout are really biting  good.  Cowbells and orange spoons are working well.  Run tight to the bank 50 foot down.

Fishing should really pick up.  The surface temp is 50 degrees, and we have good schools of bait.

The ice is finally melting, and the Spring Fishing season is getting started.

We’ve been fishing the Traverse Bays the past couple of weeks.  The Lake Trout and Whitefish are really starting to kick in.

Fishing the steep secondary banks 130’ to 150’ deep is good while Jigging SS squirrels and Swedish pimples.   Very slow trolling, cowbells and spin glows are also working.

The Lake Trout should start moving shallow in the next couple of weeks

08/08/2008 - Captain Bill Winowiecki of Watta Bite Charters reports from Glen Arbor:

Fishing out of Glen Arbor has been Great !!! Very large Kings are being caught and lost! The Manitou Islands are holding good schools of Salmon. Yesterday we had a 12 fish limit with 7 fish over 15 lbs. The largest was 22 lbs. These fish are very feisty and hard on the tackle. We broke off 3 fish, and straightened hooks on many others. Good catches are being caught. Not always limits, because it takes time to fight these fish. The most productive methods have been King fisher fly combinations, blue and green flashers with glow flies, chilly willy spoons have been good. Temp has come up some, right around 80 ft. We have been fishing 80 to 100 ft down over 100 to 200 ft of water. The weather looks good for the weekend. Watch out for logs and branches. I caught another branch on a downrigger this week. Please be careful.

Capt. Gary Miserlian of Decoy & Westwind Charters reports from Manistee:

The large fish have definitely arrived. The fish are not quite as deep 70-90 down and from 125-200 of water. Fish catchers, Spin Doctors and KRW fly’s are still working well. The 15’s-20 should work.

Captain Bill Winowiecki of Watta Bite Charters reports from Glen Arbor:

What a difference a week can make. Glen Arbor has really turned on. Good catches of large kings are being caught. Many fish are in the 15 to 20 lb range. The Manitou Islands have been especially hot. The most productive methods have been King Fisher Fly combinations. The Blue and Green flashers the blue glow flies. Temp has been deep. We have been going down 110 to 160 ft on the cables, over 180 to 250 ft of water. The weather looks great, so these fish should have around for a while. We still have logs and boards floating around, due to all of the flooding in Wisconsin and Southern Michigan. Please be careful out there

Captain Bill Winowiecki of Watta Bite Charters reports from Glen Arbor:

The past couple of weeks, our Lake Trout fishing has slowed. The Salmon fishing has been steady with 7 to 10 bites, and 3 to 7 fish per trip. We took a 19lb King Friday, July 11th. Our fish have been deep. Temp has been between 100 and 130 ft down. The King fisher fly combinations are working well. Yellow, blue and orange spoons are picking up fish. I have been hooking some large fish that usually run out about 500 ft of line and get off. Usually one or two of these hook up per trip. I have landed 3 of the last 8 hook ups. All three of the fish were over 16lbs. Also, with all of the flooding in Manistee and areas of Central Michigan, plus with a large dose of Southwest winds we have all kinds of trees, logs, and branches floating around near Glen Arbor and Leland. I trolled into a pile of floating debris last week. Please be careful especially running at twilight.
